Dr. Charles Quist-Adade uses video to teach his students the meaning of an important concept in Sociology, “the sociological imagination.” Using Charles Wright Mills’ sociological imagination and Marshall McLuhan’s “global village,” Dr. Quist-Adade coined the term “the global sociological imagination” to demonstrate how people are interconnected and interdependent, and how their actions and, indeed, inactions affect and are affected by others irrespective of where they may live in the world.Watch this short video, What Have My Cocoa Beans Got to Do with Canada at: http://www.quist-adade.com/2011/09/cocoa-bean-story/.

In the Department of Criminology, Mike Larsen and Wade Deisman are pushing the virtual envelope with several innovative pedagogical initiatives. The two instructors are team teaching a course addressing the problems of police deviance and accountability. Lectures from the course will be posted as podcasts on I-Tunes – marking the first ever Kwantlen I-Tunes University course. Furthermore, students in the class will learn about and partake in ‘public criminology‘ both by writing about what they are learning and thinking about and by sharing their thoughts on a special Police Deviance blogging site (http://policedeviance.wordpress.com/). Finally, since Canadian material dealing with issues of police misconduct and corruption is very limited, the two instructors will be working with students in the class to develop some of the source material for an introductory textbook on the subject they are planning on writing together after the course concludes.
