Sheet Mulching Trials

The sunny February weather found Hort 1119 Landscape and Environment students toppling decades worth of English ivy growth in preparation for sheet mulching trials as a suppression method for invasive plant species. Various combinations of sheet mulching layers will be applied and layer decomposition, soil moisture and ivy starts will be monitored over the coming year. Historically planted as a climber and ground cover, Hedera helix has become invasive in the lower mainland and Vancouver Island displacing native plants and causing tree decline.

A - Frame Team

HORT 2490 (Organic Greenhouse Production) class enjoyed constructing a triple layer A-frame style 'Urban Garden', to support the production of crops such as trailing strawberries, peas, beans, and shallow rooted crops such as lettuce and radish. A few hours work and some basic tools and supplies and the finished product (modeled after a similar structure seen at a demonstration farm in Uganda!) is ready to go.

Cuba Interns

Our students bound for Cuba, left Tuesday morning on a 7:30 flight with Paul Richard. Paul emailed this morning to say they'd arrived, had a two-three hour adventure getting all students and bikes from the airport to the hotel, but everyone was now safely there with all of their luggage. Today they have a free day in Havana and tomorrow will visit the Oxfam office and the Canadian Embassy. On Friday we chartered a bus to take them to Sancti Spiritus and they're expected to arrive in mid afternoon. This group is staying at the regular university residence where they'll be surrounded by Cuban students. The previous group stayed in the graduate residence which was a little classier but separated from the regular students. They felt this held them back from meeting the Cuban students. They are all doing field and lab studies in biofertilizer or biocontrol of diseases and pests. This year Cuba is more ready for them and they will be immediately involved with their projects. For their credit this year, they are all registered in coop.

Horticulture students raise the roof…

Students in Kwantlen's HORT 2375 course (Greenhouse Facilities and Equipment) took in a tour of Darvonda Greenhouses to view the construction of their new 8½ acre, state-of-the-art Venlo-style glasshouse. This new production greenhouse will feature several environmentally sustainable initiatives such as water conservation (roof water collection and treatment) and energy conservation (ultra-wide glass panes to increase light transmission and powder-coated framework to increase production for the same energy input). While there, students were treated to seeing the glazing crew from Prins Greenhouses (main contractor) install the roof glass and ventilation sections, using industry developed mechanization equipment.
