Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts

Kwantlen's new Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts degree (BMMA) provides comprehensive knowledge in the field of musical arts, as well as broad liberal education set within the framework of a strong academic and applied curriculum. All music courses aim to address applied and critical thinking skills in relation to musical arts.
The degree offers traditional music courses, such as private lessons, ensembles, music theory, and music history, but also includes practical courses, such as the business of music, music pedagogy, and the psychophysiology of music performance. Students can major in piano, voice, guitar, or an orchestral instrument. While the focus is on classical music, aspects of jazz and popular music are included as well.
Students intending to enrol in the BMMA program need to do a performance audition, three placement tests, and an interview. Theoretical, aural, and practical performance skills must be at a university-entrance level:
- Theory knowledge: equivalent to RCM Grade 2
- Practical work: piano - equivalent to RCM Grade 10; all other instruments - equivalent to RCM Grade 6
Some students may be required to enrol in selected preparatory courses prior to advancing to degree courses. Typical program entry is in September.
The BMMA accommodates multiple points of entry: Years I, II and III. To enter Year III students must have completed all requirements for Years I and II with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 and they must re-audition. Students may also be admitted to the program by transfer from other institutions at any point up to Year III; they must meet all entrance requirements at the time of admission and may be required to complete placement exams in order to determine a reasonable point of entry.
