Why take Biology at Kwantlen?

Kwantlen's small class sizes enable us to provide a learning environment in which you can interact directly with your instructors, both in the classroom and outside the class. In keeping with Kwantlen's polytechnic mandate, most of our courses include weekly labs.  In the fall of 2012 the "open lab" system that we have used for many years on Richmond and Surrey campuses will be replaced with scheduled 3-hour labs. The new lab activities will provide a rigorous hands-on learning experience to complement the classroom theory. The Langley campus Biology courses already have scheduled labs; these courses are aimed at students in specialized programs such as Environmental Protection Technology, but they are open to non-program students as well.

Are you looking for a science or Q credit towards an Arts or Education degree?

For students not majoring in Biology, the Kwantlen Biology Department offers a non-majors course, Biology 1112: Biology Today. This course focuses on current "hot topics" in biology including cloning, stem cell research, genetically modified foods, and DNA fingerprinting. The course provides the opportunity to expand your understanding with "hands-on" labs. To find out more about this course, click on the course description.

Are you interested in one of Kwantlen's applied programs?

The Biology Department at Kwantlen offers support courses for the Nursing, Environmental Protection TechnologyPlant Health, and Sustainable Agriculture programs at Kwantlen. For the Nursing program the Biology Department offers two one-semester courses in Anatomy and Physiology which provide students with the opportunity to integrate the theory with hands-on labs. For Environmental Protection Technology, Plant Health, and Sustainable Agriculture the Biology Department offers Introductory Biology I and II (Biology 1110, 1210) as well as Ecology (Biology 2322). Are you interested in a career in the health/medical field, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or forensic science?

For students majoring in Sciences, the Kwantlen Biology Department offers university transfer courses in first year Biology (Introductory Biology I and II) as well as second year Biology courses in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Ecology, Genetics, and Microbiology.

Through planned packaging of first and second year biology and other courses, it is possible to obtain a Associate of Science degree, which is recognized as completion of the first two years of a Bachelor of Science in Biology. The Associate Degree can then be transferred to any university or university college for baccalauriate degree completion. Clicking on the following links provides: general details about Kwantlen's Associate Degree; specific information on the Associate of Science-Biology degree at Kwantlen;a list of Kwantlen courses required by specific universities for completion of a Biology degree; and an overview of offerings within Kwantlen's Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Applied Sciences.

All Kwantlen Biology Courses are transferrable to universities throughout Canada and the United States. The Provincial Biology Articulation Committee has generated transfer grids for Biology courses in British Columbia to help students with transfer credit inquiries.

Coming Soon! Kwantlen Polytechnic University will be offering our first Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. The first intake date is yet to be determined. Watch for updates!
